Carlos “JC” Santana is a world renowned authority
in the area of performance enhancement and is one of the most prolific
speakers in the fitness industry. JC has been published extensively
and has produced many videos on the subject of performance enhancement.
His educational resources bring the most innovative and cutting edge
training methodology to fitness professionals around the world.
JC is a proud graduate of Florida Atlantic University (FAU), where
he received his BS and MEd degrees in Exercise Science. While at FAU
he served as an adjunct professor of Weight Training Systems and Sports
Training Systems.
JC is a member and a certified Health Fitness Instructor with the ACSM,
and a member and Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS)
with the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). He is
a certified Senior Coach and Club Coach Course Instructor with the USAWF,
and a LEVEL I coach with the US Track and Field Association. JC has served
as the Chairman for the NSCA’s Sport Specific Conference (1999-2000),
an NSCA Conference Committee member (1998-2001) and was the NSCA’s
Florida State Director (1997-2001).
Professionally, JC has been in the fitness industry since he was 14
years old. At that young age he was a fitness instructor at Brody’s
Gym in Miami, the home of several champion bodybuilders, powerlifters
and other professional athletes. He eventually managed Brody’s
when he was only 15-16 years of age. JC went on to direct and operate
several fitness facilities in the Miami, Hollywood and Boca Raton areas.
He is now the president and director of the Institute of Human Performance
(IHP) in Boca, Raton Florida; a state-of-the-art training facility servicing
a clientele that ranges from elite athletes to the neurologically challenged
patient (www.ihpfit.com).
JC has always believed in practicing
what he preaches. This is why you can find him at IHP everyday
training his diverse clientele. You will also see him giving back to
the community through the many hours he volunteers to local athletes,
particularly the Spanish River Wrestling Team where he is on his 4th year
as their strength and conditioning coach.
JC is the director of
his consulting company, Optimum Performance Systems (OPS), which
is based out of IHP. OPS provides: Consulting for equipment manufactures,
fitness organizations, fitness professionals and major sports teams,
athletic development camps, education for fitness professionals and
internships for graduates in the allied health professions.
As
an athlete, JC has always had a fascination with the human body, training
and sports. His love for competition and training began with little league
sports at 8 years of age and has never stopped. JC began his formal
physical training at the age of 12. He followed a strict training regimen
designed for the development of striking power. This program included
miles of running in 12”-18” of water and sand, a variety
of calisthenics, striking and hand hardening training, jump training,
and meditation.
JC has competed at the state and national level in 5 different sports
throughout his athletic career. His true loves in sports remain the martial
arts and Olympic weightlifting. In 2004, JC competed at the USA
Judo Nationals. He decided to drop 30 pounds and compete in the
Master’s (40-44 years of age) 220-pound division. JC’s main
reason and goal was to go out there and compete. The
training paid off with a 3rd place finish with no injuries. JC is
getting ready for the 2005 Judo Nationals. This time he is looking
forward to being at the top of the medal stand. If he is successful in
this endeavor, he will travel to the World Master’s Championships. The
results of that journey will be in the next book!
In spite of his professional accomplishments, JC feels his highest achievement
has been his family and the bond they share. His wife of 9 years, Debbie
and his three children, Rio (14), Caila (5), Dante (3), Mia (newborn) remain
his top priority. JC pledges to pass on the legacy to his children
that his parents passed on to him; family first, then everything else.
